“Stay home”: Cariboo Regional District to seasonal residents

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Stay home – that’s the message coming from the Cariboo Regional District to seasonal residents

With a holiday long weekend just days away, the Cariboo Regional District is asking all non-permanent residents to stay away. Recreational property owners and out of town visitors won’t be welcomed in the region while the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

CRD Chair Margo Wagner says rural hospitals are small and have limited resources. She says it doesn’t take much to overwhelm the system.

“We need people to understand that this is a difficult situation and their cooperation could save lives,” said Wagner.

The CRD says its advice is a polite but “strong” request. Wagner says she hopes the message is being expressed by all levels of government as the long weekend nears.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is straining our local resources. Residents are already feeling the impacts of this unprecedented situation. An influx of visitors right now could be too much for our emergency services, local food stores, and other essential service providers to handle,” explains Stuart Larson, Cariboo Regional District Manager of Protective Services.

Larson says other factors are adding additional challenges to the CRD.

“Rising temperatures are increasing spring run-off and the potential for flooding, washouts, and road closures. It’s vital that unnecessary travel to the Cariboo be reduced as much as possible for the time being.”

A similar message came from Sun Peaks Municipality staff earlier this week.
