SUN PEAKS, B.C. — The municipality of Sun Peaks is urging non-residents to stay home and stay away from the resort town during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a joint news release, Chief Administrative Officer Rob Bremner, Mayor Al Raine and Emergency Operations Director Dean Schiavon say residents are collectively working on social distancing and self-isolation.

“[I]t has come to our attention that a few owners and travellers are still coming to Sun Peaks to recreate or enjoy their recreation property,” the release states. “Some of you may believe that COVID-19 has not hit Sun Peaks. We know that there were positive tests from Sun Peaks and our medical staff have identified some 20+ presumptive cases, all healthy individuals who are now recovering in isolation.”

The release points to direction from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry — which asks all B.C. residents to stay home and eliminate non-essential travel.

“Our First Responders and Fire & Rescue resources and especially medical facilities are very limited during this pandemic. Please help us keep Sun Peaks safe and in line with the provincial regulations. There is no question that travel has been a major contributor to the spread of the Coronavirus so please be part of the solution and not part of the threat.”

The release advises that, unless your primary residence is in Sun Peaks, do not go to the resort town.
