THREE STABBINGS

Kamloops RCMP investigating three stabbings in five hours

KAMLOOPS — Police in Kamloops are investigating three separate stabbing incidents in the city.

In a news release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 300-block of Tranquille Road Wednesday night (April 1) at 8:24 p.m.

Shelkie says a 47-year-old Kamloops man was found with minor injuries to his face.

At 9:42 p.m., police responded to a stabbing victim who went to hospital. The 31-year-old man had been stabbed while in the 400 block of Tranquille Road.

At 1:30 a.m. this morning, police again responded to hospital for a stabbing victim. In this case, a 35-year-old Kamloops man was stabbed at a location “that has not yet been determined”.

Motives for two of the three incidents are not clear.

“We do believe that one of the situations — the one that happened at 9:42 in the evening — may be related to the drug culture, as the person involved is closely associated to the drug culture,” Shelkie told CFJC Today.

There have been anecdotal reports of increases in crime due to measures enacted to battle COVID-19, but Shelkie says there is no evidence to suggest that is a factor in the recent string of violence in Kamloops.

“We believe it’s just a blip,” said Shelkie. “We haven’t seen an uptick in violent crime due to COVID-19. Although, it is a very unusual blip in that there was the stabbing that happened last weekend, and then these three stabbings, and none of the four stabbings that have occurred now are related to each other.”

“Every act of violence in our community is aggressively investigated. In each case, the investigation is in it’s infancy and therefore there is little information that can be released. At least one case directly involved a participant in the Kamloops drug trade, although none of these incidents appear related to each other. Pandemic or not, RCMP Kamloops remain focussed on delivering robust service on our core policing functions. Anyone with information on any of these incidents are encouraged to call the Kamloops RCMP,” said Staff Sgt. Simon Pillay in the release.

“We’re hoping that this is just a blip,” added Shelkie. “Again, we have the officers here who are investigating and we are able to deal with this type of situation, but it is very unusual to have happened in one evening.”
