Total cases of COVID-19 in B.C. now at 792 including 70 in Interior Health

KAMLOOPS — The provincial government has announced 67 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C., bringing the total to 792.

There are a total of 70 cases in the Interior Health region.

Two more people have died in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, bringing the provincial death toll to 16.

“Two additional long-term care homes in the Fraser Health region have staff with confirmed cases of COVID-19, The Harrison at Elim Village and Chartwell Independent Living at Langley Gardens,” Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix say in a joint statement. “In total, 11 long-term care homes in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health regions have confirmed cases of COVID-19. Public health officials are providing support to implement outbreak protocols.”

So far, 275 patients with COVID-19 have fully recovered and no longer have isolation requirements.

Of the total cases, 73 people are hospitalized in B.C.

“We are tracking the epidemic curve closely here in B.C. We are also monitoring outbreaks in other nations to guide our health system preparations and public health response,” the statement reads. “In the past few days, our upward path has been less severe than other places, but we continue to see steady increases in community transmission cases and continue to be concerned about outbreaks, which could quickly grow and challenge our pandemic response.”

Dix and Henry say with every person in B.C. 100 per cent committed to physical distancing, the curve can be flattened. They also reiterate their discouragement of in-person gatherings of any size.

Interior Health confirmed to CFJC Today on Friday that there are no COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care homes in the region.
