Kamloops residents shine spotlight on local businesses doing good during global pandemic

KAMLOOPS — It is easy to get discouraged and feel down by constantly keeping up with the latest updates of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Kamloops there have been businesses and restaurants closing their doors to abide by the provincial government’s latest directives.

For the businesses that are staying open, some of them are taking extraordinary steps to help out their community.

We asked our readers, viewers, and listeners to nominate some exceptional business leaders in our community who are trying to do the best they can during this unprecedented time.

Moon Wok Chinese RestaurantMoon Wok has moved to takeout and delivery options only, but it’s also stepping up to help out those in need. The restaurant is delivering two complementary dinners per night for the next month or so to an individual or family in need. Moon Wok is asking for people to private message them on Facebook with a person or family in need’s name, phone number or way to contact them, and why they deserve to have this. Two individuals or families will be selected each night.

“It can be for an elderly person who cannot get out anymore, someone who’s job has been affected, or just to put a smile on someone’s face you care about. Let’s stand together.”

K Spin Indoor Cycling StudioK Spin, located downtown, is live streaming their spin classes so that people can stay safe while staying healthy. The company is also offering to drop off a bike, shoes and weights for customers to use at home for $99 per month.

The Organic BergerThis Pritchard company is no longer selling its handmade soaps. But due to store shortages and some folks stockpiling supplies, the company will be donating the last of its stock to whoever is in need of soap.

Superstore, Shoppers Drugmart, Save-On-FoodsThese three stores are opening an hour earlier than usual in order to allow seniors, people with disabilities, and in some cases those who are immunocompromised to shop for essentials.

Centre for Seniors InformationThe Kamloops Centre for Seniors Information is offering toilet paper for seniors who have been struggling to find some. The limit is two rolls per person, and the centre is giving them away by donation. The centre is also asking for anyone who is able to, to donate toilet paper.

Tournament Capital Strength & ConditioningThe crossfit gym is offering online/streamed workouts to members, and the public for those looking to continue to get some form of exercise during the heightened social distancing time.

Tim Horton’s — The owner of three Tim Horton’s locations in our city has been dropping off coffee and treats to Royal Inland Hospital’s emergency room staff one to two times per day to help workers fuel up and get through the day.

Caremongering A group of Kamloops residents has formed on Facebook to try and help those in need in our community. Several people are offering different services to seniors, those with disabilities, and those who are immunocompromised.

United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo — The United Way offers a resource to all BC residents who are in need. It’s free of charge and connects people in crisis to the information they need on financial assistance or income support through a referral process. It was put in place after the 2017 wildfires and is designed to reduce the unknowns in a situation like we’re facing in COVID-19. It is a texting service that is fast and responsive, and can help people get accurate information. Text 211 to use this resource.
