KAMLOOPS — While social distancing has become the norm for our daily lives, it’s not as easy to practice if you rely on transit to get around the city.

According to Communications Manager for BC Transit, Jonathan Dyck, they’ve undertaken some new cleaning protocols throughout the province to ensure the safety of the passengers to use transit as their primary mode of transportation.

“What we’ve been doing is we’ve been increasing cleaning in high-touch areas of the bus; this includes on the stanchions and the bus stop buttons, and other areas that would be considered high touch,” Dyck told CFJC Today via a FaceTime interview from Victoria, BC. “We’ve also increased cleaning at all of our facilities across the province.”

Dyck says while BC Transit is doing it’s best to ensure the vehicles are safe for passengers, those passengers can also take steps to ensure the safety of everyone riding city buses.

“One of those is making sure to stand behind the red line on the bus, and that’ll give you space from the front of the bus and social distance from the driver,” Dyck suggests. “If you do need to, feel free to move around the bus. If there’s open space, move around and sit where you’re most comfortable.”

Dyck also suggests riders recognize proper hygiene techniques such as hand-washing and coughing into your elbow are vital to keeping everyone safe.
