EVENT REVIEW: The Kamloops Short Short Film Festival

Mar 10, 2020 | 3:01 PM

FIRST AND FOREMOST, well done to all who participated! With more than twenty entries in this year’s Kamloops Short Short Film Festival, part of the larger 24th Annual Kamloops Film Festival, it was a highly entertaining family-friendly Sunday afternoon.

While I can’t go through all the entries, I will say that it never fails to surprise me the imagination, time, and overall commitment of these up-and-coming filmmakers. The other fun part is you never know what to expect! From Public Service Announcements (PSAs), highly personal perspectives, historical narratives, to stop-motion animation with Lego, dancing robots, to fully executed high-end productions — all in the short, short time of under five minutes!

Creating a film is not an easy task. It requires clear thought, an understanding of the creative process, and a commitment to that process — and it is almost never a solo endeavour. You need to create a team that promises to stick with you and your idea that burns brightly. The skill set here, whether elementary school, middle school, young adults, or working professionals is awesome. Leadership, time and project management, resourcefulness, quick thinking, flexibility and of course, being able to play well with others.

The only disappointment this year was the community turnout. Last year the Paramount was packed; this year, just under half full.

Kamloops is slowly becoming a filmmaker’s destination. With content creation happening at a pace and rate never seen before, fresh locations, faces, ideas and stories are in high demand.

Keeping with the short, short concept – I’ll keep this brief. Get out and support our local filmmakers and their quests to create. We all benefit!

And kudos to the winning team behind the film, The Economist. Good work lads! Good work on all the films!
