RCMP holding Kamloops drivers accountable

KAMLOOPS — Officers with Kamloops RCMP’s Municipal Traffic Services, and the Southeast District Traffic Service were out in force today — catching distracted, and seat-belt free drivers.

March is distracted driving month, as well as seat belt month.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says they’ve been ramping up enforcement, and RCMP were set up near the intersection of McGill Road and Summit Drive today to make sure drivers were following the law.

“So we have an officer up the road who recognizes when somebody is using their cell phone or not wearing a seat belt — he radios the officers here, they pull them over, and then they issue them their violation ticket.”

Besides ticketing unsafe drivers, Shelkie adds that police hope the operation was able to remind drivers without a cell phone in sight to continue the safe practices.

“Distracted driving does account for more than 25 per cent of crashes in british Columbia. And there was also an average of 78 deaths in British Columbia over the last few years,” she notes. “So it’s really something that I think people need to get in their minds, that they need to put away their cell phones, and pay attention when they’re driving.”
