Golfers brave cold conditions, enjoy opening day at Rivershore

KAMLOOPS — The water hazards remain frozen and there’s still snow in some of the bunkers, but golfers are out at Rivershore and embracing the beginning of another season.

“It’s awesome,” said golfer Ellen Bryde. “I’ve waited all winter. It was a long winter, and it’s just great to be out.”

Ray Allegretto added, “It’s the earliest I’ve ever been out. I feel quite fortunate to be out here.”

“This is fantastic. Cabin fever,” noted Charlie Larsen. “I wanted to play golf.”

Rivershore Golf Links officially opened on Thursday, one of two Kamloops golf courses to tee off for the season along with Big Horn.

Larsen came out on opening day as a single at Rivershore and coincidentally wound up with other golfers from Eaglepoint, which is still two and half weeks from opening in Barnhartvale (projected to be Mar. 21). Despite the legendary South Thompson winds, they wanted to be out and were prepared for the elements.

“I’ve got my toque, my big jacket, my mitts, my hot pods. I’m set,” said Bryde.

Allegretto added, “I have winter gloves on and I have mitts on my cart, some winter golf pants and a couple of extra layers underneath my jacket.”

Rivershore welcomed about 100 golfers on the first day open thanks to the recent spring-like temperatures that allowed grounds crews to prep the course properly.

“We just got a little bit of warm weather these last couple days that have taken the last little bit of snow off. The frost has come out of the ground,” said general manager of Rivershore Golf Links Kevin Oates. “We had to do a little work on our greens. We rolled them and cut them this morning, and we’re good to go. They’re rolling great.”
