TRU, Kelson Group celebrate grand opening of first development for The Reach

KAMLOOPS — The Kelson Group’s newest building is a 77-unit, five storey apartment complex located at Thompson Rivers University.

Tenants began moving in in October and the apartments filled up quickly.

“Our statistics show us that 60 per cent of the residents are TRU students, which is maybe a little lower than we thought when we first started the building,” said Jason Fawcett, vice-president of operations for Kelson Group. “The other 40 per cent, there’s some five or six who are professors at the university while we have another mix from the community that are retirees, there’s small families and professionals.”

The Kelson Group and representatives from TRU and the City of Kamloops celebrated the grand opening of Legacy Square with a ribbon cutting and tour.

The building’s exterior was designed to match the aesthetics of the rest of the campus.

“TRU has strict building guidelines, which we are happy to adhere to, we think that’s a great thing to have,” said Leon Schroeder with CHB Architects. “If they want a higher-quality design as architects we love that.”

Legacy Square is the first development of the first phase of The Reach, a brand new neighbourhood on the TRU Campus. It’s a neighbourhood the Kelson Group will play a significant part in building.

“We’ve started construction on two additional buildings two doors away that one is going to be a rental building, similar to Legacy Square, that will be 42 apartments,” Fawcett said, “and then we’re also going to be building a condominium building that will have 40 condos for sale that we’re hoping are going to be available early next year.”

Through the sale of the land and earning from development, TRU has put away $5.4 million to support students and researchers.

“We’ve endowed that,” said TRU President Brett Fairbairn “so we’ve invested it in perpetuity, so each year we’ll spend the earnings. So, already by the end of the month of March we’ll have awarded $31,000 in student bursaries and that number is going to grow in the future.”

As The Reach grows the University will continue to benefit from the budding community.
