KAMLOOPS — To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the 2010 Games, PacificSport Interior BC and the Kamloops Adaptive Sports Association are hosting a sledge hockey open house at the McArthur Island Sports Centre on Saturday evening (Mar. 1).

The event will take place from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on the Olympic ice, which was retrofitted for sledge hockey in 2013. Organizers say everyone of all ages and abilities is welcome.

“ViaSport came out with a grant for smaller communities to host an event to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Winter Olympics, so PacificSport Interior BC with the Kamloops Adaptive Sports Association applied and were successful,” said Katie Klassen with PacificSport Interior BC. “So we’re excited to run an open house for sledge hockey, so we’re inviting the public to try out this Paralympic sport.”

Organizers are hoping Saturday’s open house can give people an opportunity to try the sport and see if they like it.

“We were actually successful with another grant as well, so we just ordered seven new smaller-sized sledges that youth can use as well. We want to really expand sledge hockey here in Kamloops. This is a way to get more awareness about the sport,” noted Klassen.

The city runs a weekly sledge hockey program that’s open to people of all abilities. It’s at McArthur Island from October to March.
