‘Avoid all avalanche terrain’: Avalanche Canada warns of high risk around BC

BRITISH COLUMBIA — Avalanche Canada is warning back country users to be very cautious this weekend.

Given the current weather conditions, Forecaster James Floyer says their best advice right now is to avoid avalanche terrain in areas of British Columbia with an elevated risk.

“That is the safest way of approaching the mountains right now,” he explains, “It doesn’t mean to say you need to avoid travelling in the back country, but it does require selecting terrain that is either at a shallow angle, protected by trees, and certainly not threatened by large avalanche paths.”

Floyer says moisture, mild temperatures and wind are all primary avalanche-causing factors, and we are likely to see all three this weekend.

“We have a significant storm, and these things are known either as an atmospheric river, or the colloquialism -as a Pineapple Express,” says Floyer, “And this Pineapple Express will result in large avalanches pretty much across the mountains of western Canada.”
