KAMLOOPS — A major new development has been announced for Kamloops’s downtown core.

In a news release, A&T Project Developments says it’s partnering with Invictus Properties to transform the downtown core.

“THE HIVE KAMLOOPS” will be located between Fifth and Sixth Avenues along Lansdowne Street, and the vision for this project is to transform the area into a blend of office and retail space.

“The Hive development marks a new chapter for our city and will continue the revitalization of downtown Kamloops. The building and vision for the site will create new business opportunities for companies based in and out of Kamloops, showcasing the quality of life we enjoy in our city,” Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian says in a news release.

The first phase of the project will be located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Lansdowne Street. According to the release, the building has been designed to reflect the needs of the local business community with private balconies, large windows and modern building systems.

The first building will be five storeys and have 45,000 square feet of office and retail space. It will include two levels of underground parking.

The hope is for the building to target progressive organizations who value sustainability, collaborative spaces, and amenities.

A spring start for construction is expected, with an anticipated completion date of fall 2021 for the first building.

“Investment in new office space in the downtown core has not occurred in more than a decade; today that changed with the announcement of The Hive,” says city councillor Mike O’Reilly in the release. “This new office construction will continue the redevelopment of the downtown core and help to diversify our economy. The Hive has the opportunity to create hundreds of new jobs in the downtown core and will keep our downtown vibrant.

“The recent changes to the revitalization tax exemption bylaws approved by Council contributed to the decision to move the vision for The Hive from a yellow light to a green light. I believe this announcement is just the beginning and I look forward to many more new commercial developments in the downtown and the North Shore in the coming years.”

Urban Systems’ head office will anchor Phase One, with two floors of custom-designed office and space to serve their clients.
