BIG Little Science Centre receives $50,000 donation

KAMLOOPS — A generous donation has been made to the BIG Little Science Centre in Kamloops — and it comes at just the right time.

Executive director Gord Stewart says the donor doesn’t want to be named publicly, but is hoping this will encourage more donations.

“A local family foundation has donated $50,000 to the science centre, and is hoping to have other people donate and match that amount, so it’s all sort of to help us out with our current situation and our ongoing fundraising, but also to help us with our move,” Stewart says.

The centre is renovating its new location on Seymour Street. It signed a three-year agreement to operate in the former Value Village location after the Parkcrest Elementary fire forced the centre to move from the old Happyvale Elementary School.

“We’ve had to renovate a new site, it’s been taking a little while because it’s just how renovations go. So we’re looking at trying to finish fundraising for the $400,000 for the cost of the renovation and we’re three quarters of the way there now at least.”

Stewart says he’s still trying to absorb the generous donation, which was just made last Friday.

“This is a great opportunity if you want to help the science centre out. Basically this is a matching donation so if you donate some funds it goes toward matching that amount.”
