KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP would like to remind you that cyber-security experts will not cold call you.

This reminder after a local resident was taken for a few hundred dollars recently when a scammer strung her along.

According to a news release, the woman received a call from someone claiming to be a representative of a computer company, telling her that her computer had a virus or spyware.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the woman granted the scammer remote access to her computer and then, when the scammer asked for payment, she accessed her online banking account.

This scammer was able to gain access to the woman’s banking information.

While the culprit only withdrew a few hundred dollars, Shelkie says it could have been much worse.

Shelkie advises people not give strangers remote access to their computers, and if someone calls you about problems with your computer’s security, simply hang up.
