BIG BAR, B.C. — Next steps are being taken to address the Big Bar Landslide on the Fraser River.

In a news release, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans says a contract has been awarded for winter construction work on the slide.

DFO Minister Bernadette Jordan will be coming to B.C. to visit the site at the end of the week.

“There is no higher priority for me and for my department in British Columbia than addressing the Big Bar Landslide on the Fraser River. I’m happy to announce that a contract has been awarded by Public Services and Procurement Canada, and winter construction to enhance salmon passage will start shortly,” Jordan says in the release. “Since the discovery of the landslide, our government has been working tirelessly alongside First Nations, industry stakeholders, and the Province of B.C. to find a lasting solution.

“In the week ahead, I will be visiting the slide site, as well as meeting with First Nations leadership and invested stakeholders. I will also be making an important announcement on our next steps to secure the long-term sustainability of these key salmon runs, and for the communities who rely on the success of these stocks.”
