HOPE, B.C. — Police are investigating a fatal crash on Highway 1 north of Hope.

In a news release, RCMP E-Division Cpl. Mike Halskov says police and emergency services responded to a crash on the highway roughly five kilometres north of Hope, near American Creek.

Halskov says the road and weather was described as snowing with slushy conditions.

When officials arrived, it was determined a northbound vehicle driven by a man in his 70s from northern BC crossed into the southbound lanes, where the car crashed with a southbound tanker truck carrying diesel fuel.

Halskov says the driver of the car died at the scene, while the driver of the tanker truck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Several officials with the RCMP, Ministry of Environment, and a HAZMAT team was called in to assist with recovery of the diesel fuel from the tanker truck and clean up of the scene.

There were no reports of any fuel spillage.

The highway was closed for more than 12 hours. Halskov says at this time impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor. Police are asking drivers to use caution when driving in bad weather, ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires, and drive according to road conditions.

Fraser Valley Traffic Services is investigating, and anyone with information is asked to call them at (604) 702-4039.
