SALMON ARM, B.C. — It was a chase through the snow for the Mounties in Salmon Arm on Christmas Eve after officers responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint on the 3500 block of Lakeshore Road NE.

A resident called police after spotting an unknown man in a truck stuck in the snow on the property.

“When police arrived, the suspect male tried to power out of the deep snow and the vehicle became immobilized,” Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Scott West said. “He then tried to flee the area and threw items in the snow.

“The attending officers located and arrested the male after determining the truck had been stolen from a work site in Alberta.”

West said a police dog from Vernon was brought in to search for items the suspect tossed as he tried to escape.

“The police dog located a semi automatic handgun and investigators later determined that the handgun was stolen in 2016 from Evansburg, Alberta,” West said.

Police reported the male suspect has an extensive criminal record and was held in custody for possession of a stolen truck and gun and other charges.

West said the man is already banned from driving and possessing a weapon.
