Nov. 27, 1924 to Feb. 16, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan (Anne) Mary Ferstay (nee Fell) on February 16, 2017 at the age of 92.
Anne is survived by her children Flemming Andersen (Brenda) and Cindlylee Cordonier (Marc). Anne is also survived by her grandchildren Neil, Kristopher and Kirsten Andersen, Erik Cordonier, and great grandson Jaxon Andersen. She is predeceased by her daughter Debbie Anne Andersen (1966), first husband Poul Andersen (1981) and second husband William (Bill) Ferstay (2008). Anne was born in London England to parents John Edward Fell and Margaret Dorothy Berry. Anne lived a very full life. After growing up in the district of Barnsbury in London, Anne became a secretary and bookkeeper for Yorkshire Insurance Company, during WWII. She later worked as a secretary for a US Colonel Abernathy at the Admiralty Offices at Whitehall in London. It is then that she met a young Danish soldier, Poul Andersen, on a blind date. They continued dating when Poul returned to England after being stationed in the middle east in the years following WWII. Anne followed Poul back to his family’s farm in Denmark where they were married on Dec. 11, 1949. Flemming was born in Denmark in 1953 and spent his early years on the family farm.
Hearing of the promise of a better life in Canada, Anne, Poul and Flemming immigrated to Canada along with close friends Paul and Bea Jorgensen and their children. Debbie Ann was born in Innisfail, Alberta in 1960 and soon after the family moved to the town of Bellevue, in southern Alberta. Cindlylee was born in 1967 and soon after the family moved down the road to the town of Frank, Alberta. In the early 70’s Anne moved to Surrey with Cindlylee and by 1976, Anne and Cindlylee had settled permanently in Kamloops BC. Anne re-married in 1988 to William (Bill) Ferstay.
It is in Kamloops that Anne’s love of volunteering took hold. She volunteered with the Auxiliary to Overlander Extended Care from 1977 to 2017 and had been member of the Overlander Craft Group. She was also a long-time volunteer member of the Canadian Cancer Society. Anne continued her charitable work through her membership and leadership role with the Kamloops Eagles Aire 3453 Ladies Auxiliary from 1981 to 2017. In recognition of her volunteering efforts, Anne was awarded the City of Kamloops Centennial Medal in 1995. Anne loved to help people; she will be greatly missed by those she knew and touched.
We would like to thank the nursing staff at RIH for their care and respect for Anne and for providing the very best care in making her stay as comfortable as possible. We would also like to thank Doctor’s Langford, Montgomery and Rollheiser for their care and concern and for their assistance through this difficult time. In addition, thank-you to Dr. McLaren for his assistance as Anne’s family doctor over the last several years.
At Anne’s request, there will not be a funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made at any of Anne’s favorite charities: Auxiliary to Overlander Extended Care, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stoke Foundation or the RIH Foundation.
