SNOWFALL EXPECTED

Snowfall expected in Kamloops, along the Coquihalla this week

KAMLOOPS — Be prepared for winter conditions in Kamloops and the surrounding area this week.

That includes the Coquihalla Highway — which is expected to be hardest hit by snowfall on Thursday.

Environment Canada forecaster Doug Lundquist says two to five centimetres of snow is expected in the Kamloops valley later this week.

“What we’re looking at is snowfall coming mostly Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday being the heaviest hit down in the valley,” Lundquist says. “We think that on Wednesday and Thursday together, probably about two to five centimetres, with the five centimetres more likely over the higher terrain like Sahali.”

Lundquist says similar amounts are expected on the Coquihalla Highway, but the summit could get hit with much more.

“At Coquihalla Summit, it could easily be 15 (centimetres) and mostly on the Thursday,” he says. “And for the pass, it’ll probably continue into Friday whereas in the valley it’ll probably be mostly just Thursday.”

Temperatures will be mild, which could pose challenges for highway driving.

“Flirting above or below zero, which is a problem for travel in my opinion,” Lundquist says. “That’s about the worst conditions you can get for the roads, kind of freezing and thawing and snow and ice and all that kind of stuff thrown in. So definitely be safe and plan for the travel at least through until the weekend when things maybe will start to improve a little.”
