KAMLOOPS — The woman who died after being hit by a vehicle near Thompson Rivers University Friday (Nov. 15) has been identified as a TRU employee.

54-year-old Lucy Phua was struck and killed near the intersection of McGill Road and University Way Friday afternoon at around 5:30 p.m.

TRU Director of Executive Communications Darshan Lindsay confirms the victim was employed at the university. The university’s website lists Phua as a domestic academic advisor.

“Our focus at this time is on supporting family members and our employees, and we will not be providing further comment,” said Lindsay in an email to CFJC Today.

Meantime, police say she was legally walking in a designated crosswalk.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was taken to the Kamloops RCMP detachment to be questioned.

“At this time, we have to determine what, if any, charges. We do know she was in a crosswalk and legally crossing, so all of that will come into play in our investigation,” Cpl. Jodi Shelkie told CFJC Today on Monday. “Also Friday night was very rainy and very dark at that time, so that take part of our investigation as well. It’s ongoing as to what the direct cause of the accident was.”

With it getting darker earlier in the evening, the Kamloops RCMP say pedestrians and drivers have to be more aware of their surroundings during this time of year. “Pedestrians, please remember that even if you’re walking in well-lit areas to always wear bright clothing or reflective clothing of some kind,” noted Shelkie. “To drivers, just double-check every intersection when you’re driving after dark, just to make sure nobody’s in it or about to cross, and especially if the weather is inclement.”
