WolfPack Men’s Basketball celebrating a decade of ‘staches for Movember

KAMLOOPS — It’s that time of year again, when men’s faces being sprouting foliage on their upper lips, all as a reminder that we need to be conscious of men’s health.

Yes, it’s Movember, and the TRU WolfPack Men’s basketball team is just one group in the city taking part in the annual fundraising and awareness campaign. The ‘Pack are celebrating a decade of participation in the yearly mustachioed month. Head coach Scott Clark has been the ‘stache behind the WolfPack’s Movember madness for the past 10 years.

“I think it’s great for the players to understand that their responsibility isn’t just basketball,” Clark tells CFJC Today. “This is a community event for men, raising awareness for men’s [health]. Something that may not get as much attention as other things. It’s something we can have a little bit of fun with, and over the years, I think everyone has enjoyed that.”

Among the players, there’s a bit of competition to see who can furnish the best facial foliage. Fifth-year forward Joe Davis is the odds-on favourite (according to him) early in the month.

“I like to think I’m the early favourite,” Davis says. “But I’ve probably got the most to lose in this situation, as well. I know the guys will be on me if I don’t come out the winner.”

Second-year guard Richard Mageto says he’s been working on his November masterpiece for longer than the contest usually allows for. However, he’s pretty sure his cookie duster won’t be at the top of the list once the votes have been tallied.

“[My mustache] is actually six months in the making, right here,” Mageto says. “I was going to shave, but if I shaved, nothing was going to grow, so I decided to keep it. We’re working as a team to raise money for Movember, you know?”
