KAMLOOPS — Daybreak Rotary is using art sales to fundraise for improvements at the Overlander Extended Care Facility in Kamloops this weekend.

Over 2,000 donated pieces line the walls of the Cooper Centre (formerly Soccer Quest) for the “Art from the Attic” sale.

Beverly Warner of Rotary says the artwork ranges in price from $10 to $900.

“People in Kamloops are really happy to donate and donate for a good cause. And tomorrow night we’ll start selling the art at super prices,” she says. “You’ll never get prices like that anywhere else. If you can’t afford art — tomorrow and Saturday, you can afford art.”

Warner says Rotary hopes to raise over $20,000 to help rebuild the outdoor space at the Overlander care facility. The area is meant to be therapeutic but over time has become difficult for residents to access.

Overlander Facility Manager Matt Renfrew says frost heaves in the pathways make it nearly impossible to get to the gazebo area for those in a wheelchair, or with unstable mobility.

“We’re working hard to update our spaces and find new places for our residents that live here, but also the ones that are coming for a short time that are end of life. So that they and their families can have good spaces that are safe and are pleasant for them to have good end-of-life experiences.”

Along with the health benefits from regular time spent outdoors, Renfrew hopes an improved outdoor area would boost visitation for residents as well.

The $20 ticketed Art from the Attic event runs tomorrow from 4 to 8 p.m, and the free showing will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m.
