R Kelly Behind Bars
R. Kelly will remain behind bars, for now, as a judge denied his request for bail. According to TMZ, prosecutors say that Kelly is a flight risk if he is to be released from jail while his criminal case is pending. The singer’s legal team argues that his passport does not contain any stamps that indicate travel because rarely goes outside of the U.S. However, prosecutors said that Kelly wanted to travel to Dubai earlier this year with his two girlfriends after he was released on bail in Illinois.
Prosecutors also reject claims that Kelly won’t tamper with or intimidate witnesses, saying that he “has a history of coercing women to write letters containing false and embarrassing allegations” so he can use them as blackmail.
Prosecutors have refuted claims that Kelly is broke, saying that he receives hundreds of thousand of dollars in royalties for his music. The government has alleged that he is redirecting royalties to the bank account of a childhood friend, but he could easily redirect the money to himself.
The judge has also denied alternative holding methods such as home detention and/or body-worn monitors.
