Dancing With The Stars First Goodbye

Former Supreme Mary Wilson cha-cha-ed her way through the latest round of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars last night, but it wasn’t enough to keep her on the show for another week.

During last night’s episode, audiences watched as the 12 competing celebrities performed their second dances for audiences and judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli.

After two hours of live performances, it was revealed at the end of the episode that two celebrity-pro dancer pairings were in jeopardy of elimination: The Supremes’ Mary Wilson and Brandon Armstrong, and Ray Lewis and Cheryl Burke.

After their names were announced as being in the bottom two, Wilson and Armstrong, and Lewis and Burke joined co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews on the ballroom floor for the judges’ verdict.

After Inaba chose to save Wilson and Tonioli chose to save Lewis, head judge Goodman made the final decision. Ultimately, Goodman elected to keep Lewis in the competition, which meant Wilson was the first Season 28 contestant to be sent home.

“If I’m totally honest, neither of these couples should be in this position,” said Goodman. “However, they are and it’s very difficult because one, I want to judge from my heart; the other, I have to judge with my brain. And my brain says I’ve got to save Ray and Cheryl.”

For the second week of competition, Wilson, 75, and Armstrong performed a cha cha and earned a 15/30 from the judges while Lewis and Burke danced a foxtrot and were also awarded a 15/30.

Reflecting on her short time on DWTS, the singer said, “It was fabulous. I enjoyed it so much.”

The eliminations work a bit different this year. Each week, after the bottom two couples are revealed, judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli will have a chance to save one of the in-jeopardy pairs, while the other will be eliminated for good. If Carrie Ann and Bruno are divided in their decision, head judge Len will cast the tie-breaking vote.

Last night, Hannah Brown topped the leaderboard, with a score of 24 out of 30. Lamar Odom was once again at the bottom with 12.

Odom opened up about his health issues and 2015 overdose last night. During the episode, the 39-year-old former basketball player attributed his score on last week’s premiere (a score of 11 out of 30) to suffering short-term memory loss following his 2015 hospitalization, during which his life hung in the balance. He indicated that the memory loss was causing him to forget dance steps.

“Four years ago, I was living in Las Vegas, went to go hang out in a place I had no business. I had an overdose,” Odom said, adding that he did not do drugs that night and may have had his drink spiked. “While I was in a coma, I had 12 strokes and six heart attacks.”
