WolfPack soccer in search of wins in Alberta and Manitoba

KAMLOOPS —- Both WolfPack soccer teams are on the road this weekend — with both looking to break into the win column once again.

While soccer plays out of province, so does men’s volleyball to open its pre-season.

Women’s soccer will trip off to Manitoba for the first time in four years, for games against the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba.

It’s been a rough start to the season for the WolfPack, with only one tie to show in their first four games, and scoring only one goal.

“We’re just trying to figure out our offence.” says defender Cassie Morris. “Obviously we have only scored one goal, so this week in practice we have really focused on offence and finishing”

“Everybody knows it’s time to put points on the board.” says midfielder Ainsley Grether. “So I think coming into this weekend we will have the advantage on everybody else. Like I said, for those who have watched, it hasn’t been us not putting in 90 minutes of hard work, we’ve got that down pat. Now I think everybody is just eager to get out and get some wins. So I think we’ll have that on both of those teams, and walk away with some points.”

Grether’s optomism is based on the records of the two oppoents they’ll be facing in Manitoba this weekend.

The University of Manitoba Bisons have one win in four games. It’s been an even tougher road for the Winnipeg Wesmen, who are 0-and-4 to start the season.

Either way, all three teams are hungry for wins.

The expression is “fit to be tied”, and it’s exactly how the WolfPack men’s team is feeling these days.

They’d just like to fit a few more wins in place of those ties —- three in a row, and four in the first six games of the season.

“We’ve played well. Last weekend easy could have been two wins.” says head coach John Antulov. “The good part, as well, is that we gutted out and got the point (in each game) which could be very important at the end of this season. We’ve just got to be able to bear down in front of the net and bury those opportunities when we them.”

The WolfPack take a 1–1-4 record to Alberta to play the bookends of the Prairie division.

The Mt. Royal Cougars are 5-and-2 and in first place, while Lethbridge is in last place in the division, at 0-5-2.

Men’s volleyball coach Pat Hennelly isn’t going to let the grass grow long under the feet of his squad before the start of the Canada West season in a month.

This weekend Hennelly has the WolfPack in Edmonton for a pre-season tournament — with five matches in three days.

All against Alberta teams —- the University of Golden Bears, Mount Royal and the University of Calgary from Canada West, and the NAIT Ooks and SAIT Trojans from the Alberta College Conference. ‘

“I’m hoping we can jell together pretty quickly.” says Pat Hennelly. “The season starts October 18, a couple of weeks earlier than normal. We need to get a quick start and hopefully with this veteran group we can.”
