Councillor pushes to make Kamloops more accessible

KAMLOOPS — A first-term Kamloops councillor is pushing forward with a campaign promise to increase accessibility in Kamloops.

Sadie Hunter introduced a Notice of Motion at this week’s Kamloops council meeting asking staff to bring forward more accessibility projects for budget consideration.

Council will debate the motion at its regular meeting next week (Sept. 17).

Speaking on CFJC’s Balance of Power this week, Hunter says she wants the City to be more proactive about accessibility.

“It’s something that’s done all the time, but I would like to see it done quicker,” said Hunter. “Right now it’s limited by funding, so my ask, if it’s successful, was for staff to come back with some projects that really will accelerate the accessibility projects.”

Hunter went on to say she hopes an uptick in accessibility projects dovetails with another budget item approved in the last round of deliberations.

“It will align well with our increased active transportation projects,” said Hunter. “One of the supplementary budget items that we passed in the fall was $900,000 per year toward active transportation. I’d like to see that align with more projects that increase accessibility in the city.”
