WCT opens the season with a haunting look at historical murders

KAMLOOPS — Western Canada Theatre opens its season next week with The Drowning Girls at the Pavillion Theatre.

The Drowning Girls is based on the true story of three women who were murdered by the same man after they married him.

The story is told from the point of view of the women after their deaths.

The show will be performed in the round to give audiences a unique experience.

“One of the things we’re trying to do at the Pavillion is carve it out as a performance space for us that is a different experience for an audience,” said Director James MacDonald, “you know, it’s to provide a different type of experience to go into the theatre, not only in the types of shows that we produce, but also the experience that they have and doing a show in the round like this where you’re not only watching the show, but you’re watching the audience, and you might even get a little splash in the front row, it is an immersive experience as we like to call it.”

Kamloops actress Cheyenne Scott plays the role of Bessie.

She says audiences will likely enjoy the spectacle of the water during the production, but she also hopes they will be challenged.

While the show is at times eerie, Scott expects the audience will find some aspects of the show humourous.

“There is so much to it that is darkly humourous as well,” Scott said. “It really pokes fun at the systems that led to their demise and tackles the issue in a way that is really fun to watch.”
