BC Wildfire Service battling out of control fires near Merritt, Peachland

MERRITT — The BC Wildfire Service is tackling several fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre today (Sept. 7).

Fire Information Officer Taylor MacDonald says the Shovelnose Mountain wildfire is now estimated at 15 hectares in size, and remains out of control.

MacDonald says 34 firefighters are on site at the site about 30 kilometres south of Merritt, with 2 helicopters.

According to a tweet from the BC Wildfire Service, no communities or structures are threatened.

Elsewhere, MacDonald says the Kathleen Mountain wildfire west of Peachland remains out of control at 10 hectares in size.

“We have 30 BCWS personnel responding to that one today,” She says, “Crews are working to establish some control lines, and they’re being supported by 2 helicopters and they have had some support from skimmers as well, and 2 pieces of heavy equipment are also on site.”

Regarding the potential for new fire starts, MacDonald says they are expecting some more lightning and thunderstorms, however cooler weather is also anticipated so it’ll be a wait-and-see approach.
