NDP names new candidate for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding

KAMLOOPS — The New Democrats have named their candidate for the Kamloops-Thompson-Shuswap Riding for the October 21st Federal Election.

Local NDP President Bill Sundhu sent out a news release this morning (Sept 4) announcing that second-year TRU law student Dock Currie will be acclaimed as the riding’s candidate. Sundhu says Currie has a deep commitment and passion in fighting for workers, families, young people and others “left behind by the Liberals and Conservatives.”

Currie served as President of Simon Fraser University’s Residence and Housing Association, fighting for better living conditions for students, and as Opinions Editor and Staff writer for student newspapers at SFU and the University of Victoria. Upon graduating with Honours from UVic, he was Chancellor Bennett Scholar at York University, as well as a member of the contract teaching faculty. In 2018, he commenced studies in law at TRU and was the recipient of the Dean’s Course Prize for Legal Perspectives.

Growing up in Ottawa, then moving to British Columbia, Currie has poured his interest in socio-economic improvements into his law studies.

“Whether as a lawyer or as a politician, I want to range that towards the interests of people who usually aren’t represented in the political process.”

Currie’s nomination is the result of a move by Gina Myhill-Jones to opt out of running after previously being chosen as the NDP’s candidate.

He is now pitted against a full slate of candidates from the Liberals, Greens, People’s Party of Canada, Communists, and incumbent Conservative MP, Cathy McLeod.

Currie says his campaign will highlight social democracy, intervention into the political life of working people, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ2S, vulnerable people, and marginalized peoples.

A formal launch for Currie’s candidacy will be held in the coming days from his campaign office at 148 Tranquille Road.
