KAMLOOPS — A compost fire in the West End was doused quickly Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 3).

Kamloops Fire Rescue Platoon Captain Darryl Cooper says the blaze at a home on Arbutus Street destroyed a compost bin and three cedars before it was brought under control.

“We had a quick knockdown,” said Cooper. “Some passersby noticed it, and then the homeowner got out with his garden hose and started knocking it down. We arrived on scene and continued with fire control and mopped it up.”

Cooper says the homeowner admitted to having been clearing weeds on his property with a blowtorch, and notes that is clearly an ill-advised weed management strategy.

No one was injured.
