Suspect arrested after assault, robbery of 84-year-old Vernon man

VERNON, B.C. — A 20-year-old local man is now facing numerous charges after a quick response from the commanding officer of the Vernon RCMP.

According to the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, an 84-year-old senior was assaulted and robbed in the while he was walking in an alleyway within the 2800 block of 35th St. on July 27.

The senior was confronted by a man who punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground before stealing some of his belongings.

The suspect fled the scene and despite a description from witnesses, Mounties were not able to locate the suspect until two days later.

The suspect was arrested by Vernon’s top cop Supt. Shawna Baher while she conducted a patrol of the downtown. The arrest happened when she responded to a suspect breaking into a truck on the 2800 block of 31st St.

“As it turns out, the individual arrested by Superintendent Baher that morning had been identified as the suspect in the earlier robbery,” Cpl. Tania Finn, Media Relations Officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

The suspect is being held in custody and faces charges of robbery, assault causing bodily harm, and theft under $5,000.
