TORONTO — American Sofia Kenin upset sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 7-6 (2), 6-4 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup.

Kenin also stunned world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the first round of the WTA Tour event.

The 20-year-old Kenin trailed 4-0 in Friday’s opening set but rallied past Svitolina to win.

She carried that momentum into the second set, eventually winning the match when Svitolina’s return was too deep.

Svitolina beat Caroline Wozniacki in the 2017 Rogers Cup final, the last time the women’s half of the tournament was in Toronto.

Later Friday, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., took on third-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

In the evening matches, American Serena Williams faced Naomi Osaka of Japan and qualifier Marie Bouzkova, also from the Czech Republic, played Simona Halep of Romania.
