RAIN ON THE WAY

Kamloops heat wave is at its end

KAMLOOPS — Although Kamloops experienced the first real heat wave of the summer this week — it won’t last much longer.

Environment Canada forecaster Matt MacDonald says there’s been a ridge of high pressure all week that’s allowed a hot air mass to come up from the desert United States.

“We’ve consistently been seeing highs of 36, 37 even 38 degrees in some places,” MacDonald says. “Kamloops yesterday got up to 36.1 C — flirting with a record — so today marks a transition to a cooler but unsettled air mass for the next few days here.”

With that unsettled air mass comes a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, along with Saturday afternoon. Showers are expected on Sunday.

“You’ll definitely notice a big drop of temperatures as well on Sunday, after highs of high-30s all week, we’re only shooting for a high of 22 C on Sunday so it’ll be cool and rainy, kind of a fall-like feeling, and then much (more) moderate temperatures into next week,” he says. “So the heat is gone for the time being… that’ll be below seasonal. Average temperatures this time of year (are) highs of 29 C so yeah we’ll be about five degrees below normal next week.”

MacDonald adds that with potentially 15 millimetres of rain coming this weekend, Kamloops could see close to half of the normal amount of rain for the month of August.
