KAMLOOPS — A hot spell is making its way through the Southern Interior, and a special weather statement has been issued for parts of the region including Kamloops.

Environment Canada says in the special weather statement that a ridge of high pressure originating from the U.S. desert has settled over the B.C. Interior, and will stick around for a few days.

It will produce the first spell of hot weather we’ve seen this summer.

“At this time we don’t expect to issue a widespread Heat Warning for the (Southern Interior),” Environment Canada says. “However, the public is encouraged to protect themselves from the heat.”

Residents are reminded to stay hydrated, schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day, and never leave pets or people in a parked vehicle.

A reprieve from the heat will begin Friday, and the transition to more seasonal temperatures will be accompanied by thunderstorms.
