Kamloops city councillor applauds move by BC Transit to convert fleet to electric buses

KAMLOOPS — BC Transit is planning to convert its entire fleet to electric buses by 2040.

The transition is part of BC Transit’s low carbon fleet program, with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In Kamloops, work has already begun to reduce emissions through the use of compressed natural gas (CNG).

City Councillor Arjun Singh says the next step for Kamloops would be to convert these buses to renewable natural gas technology.

“I imagine down the road we’ll see about the plans for electric as the 2040 timeframe gets closer,” Singh said. “For the time being, we’re really, I think, pleased with the fact that we’re running compressed natural gas and we can convert them hopefully to renewable natural gas in the near future.”

BC Transit plans to buy electric buses only, beginning in 2023.

At the same time, it will be converting its other buses to low carbon technology.

Singh applauds the move by BC Transit and says climate action is urgently needed.

“I’m really happy that BC Transit and other Crown corporations in the province are working hard to try and reduce emissions from the fleet,” he said. “It’s a good example for all of us.”
