KAMLOOPS — Kamloops native Joe Hicketts has signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

The team announced the signing on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

The 23-year-old Hicketts has spent most of his time with Detroit’s minor league affiliate in Grand Rapids, playing in 204 regular season games with the Griffins and another 29 career AHL playoff games. He won the Calder Cup in his rookie season in 2017.

In 64 games in Grand Rapids last season, he led the defense in scoring with 27 points (three goals and 24 assists).

In three years with the organization, he’s been called up to play in 16 NHL games with the Red Wings, including 11 last season, accumulating three points during his short time in the big leagues.

Detroit first gave Hicketts an opportunity after he went undrafted and unsigned out of the Western Hockey League. He’ll need to clear waivers to start in the minor leagues.
