Chilcotin River flood sends trouble downstream to Fraser slide site

BIG BAR, B.C. — Debris from the flooded Chilcotin River is posing problems for officials studying a landslide downstream on the Fraser River near Big Bar.

According to a news release from the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, the buildup of logs and debris in the river means the water is not clean enough for acoustic counting equipment to operate properly.

On Wednesday, the B.C. River Forecast Centre said the Chilcotin had peaked in its 1-in-200-year flood event, and was beginning to recede.

The ministry says experts are using light imaging, detection and ranging (LIDAR) survey equipment to monitor safety to the slide site.
