BIG BAR, B.C. — Field staff working to create a safe site for potential operations on the Big Bar landslide on the Fraser River are facing weather challenges.

In a news release, the Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Ministry says the incident management team based in Lillooet is working to create options for action on the slide.

Officials are assessing the situation and evaluating options to address the conditions and risk to migrating salmon.

“Weather conditions continue to pose challenges for field staff who are working to create a safe site for potential operations,” the release states. “Current and future weather patterns may continue to impact their work. However, mitigation measures and contingencies are in place.”

Water was dumped from a helicopter bucket over the weekend to help remove unstable and loose rock above the slide site.

Crews have also constructed a helipad to be used for emergency extraction situations, and they’re using different methods to track and count the fish travelling through the site.
