KAMLOOPS — The winners of the 2019 Y Dream Home visited their brand new home in Tobiano Thursday afternoon.

It’s the first home Manmeet Sra and Simranjot Kaur have ever owned, and it only cost them $100.

“Manmeet said, ‘Do you want to try your luck?,'” Kaur said. “Obviously, we’d try, and he said, ‘Do you want $100 ticket and 50/50?’ I said, ‘Okay, just try the $100 ticket.'”

That $100 ticket for the Y Dream Home Lottery was the final ticket pulled on Wednesday afternoon and the grand prize winner.

It was Kaur’s name on the ticket.

“She’s my lucky charm,” Sra said. “Let me put it this way, she’s my lottery, right? I got this lottery, this was my jackpot, now it’s her turn to bring other jackpots in, right?”

The couple has been living in a North Shore apartment and was trying to save to buy a home of their own.

“It’s not easy, there’s only one person working right now,” Sra said. “We were working on her education side so she can get back to her career. She was a pharmacist back in India.”

The 3,000 sq. ft. home is more than the couple ever expected.

“It’s beautiful,” Kaur said. “First home. I don’t have words for how to express my feelings. But, I’m happy and it’s a beautiful home.”

Y Dream Home spokesperson Bryce Herman says it’s always a joy seeing the faces of the winners, even after 23 lotteries.

“With a young couple like this year where it’s a brand new experience, it’s their very first home, new to Canada — what a great opportunity and what a great way to say, ‘Welcome to Kamloops,'” Herman said.

Sra and Kaur have not yet decided whether to live in the house or sell it.
