KAMLOOPS — UPDATE: RCMP have now arrested a suspect they believe was involved in a downtown stabbing Canada Day. In a news release Wednesday morning (July 3) , RCMP Corporal Jodi Shelkie says the 31 year old suspect was arrested Tuesday afternoon and taken into custody pending a court appearance.

EARLIER: RCMP in Kamloops say someone was stabbed in the midst of Canada Day festivities downtown Monday night.

According to a news release from RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie, the incident happened at about 10:00 p.m., near the corner of Fifth Avenue and Victoria Street.

Shelkie says a 54-year-old man sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries after being stabbed, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Witnesses gave police some details of the altercation, and police identified a person of interest.

Though officers flooded the downtown, they weren’t able to track their target down.

Shelkie says it’s believed the victim and his assailant knew each other.

She asks anyone who saw the incident to contact RCMP at (250) 828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
