Western Canadians racing all weekend at Whispering Pines

KAMLOOPS — The whispering at Whispering Pines this weekend has been replaced by the roar of the mighty motocross.

Riders of all ages from throughout Western Canada are gathering at The Pines for the Western Canadian Amateur Nationals Motocross Championships.

“With it being an amateur event, there is no real pro class. There are a few pro guys here who are eligible to ride some other classes, but mostly it’s all amateurs,” said director of Future West Moto, the organization in charge of running the event, Ryan Lockhart.

The riders taking part have nothing but great things to say about the track, and the little bit of rain over the last couple days may have helped.

“This is one of my favourite tracks I’ve ridden at. This is my third race here,” said one rider.

Another added, “The Whispering Pines crew did an excellent job, and Mother Nature actually, too. Usually this track is so dry, it’s dusty. This is just perfect.”

Kids as young as four years old are hopping on their bikes this weekend compete. The little tikes love two things in particular about the sport — going fast and the jumps, most said.

Meantime, Jaiden and Kaylie Kayer are twins from Savona competing on their home track.

“It’s really fun, though she laps me. But it’s fun having her on the track with me,” said Jaiden.

The Kayer twins and their family have had a busy year so far. The family trailer has put in 10,000 kilometres already this year.

“We’ve been to Calgary, Manitoba, Prince George, Quesnel, Popkum down in Chilliwack. We’ve been everywhere,” joked Jaiden.

Riders at the beginner, junior, intermediate and pro levels will be racing all weekend at Whispering Pines. For a full schedule of action, you can visit the event website here.
