ASHCROFT, B.C. — Interior Health officials have met with community leaders in an initial effort to solve problems with health care in the Ashcroft area.

According to a news release from Ashcroft Mayor Barbara Roden, the June 26 meeting included officials from Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Clinton, Spences Bridge, local First Nations, the Division of Family Practice and the Patient Voices Network.

The committee will be known as the Ashcroft Health Services Area Planning Table.

The group discussed “the urgency of forming a collaborative table comprised of local health decision-makers to explore short and long-term solutions to current gaps in local health services.”

Health care delivery at the Ashcroft Hospital and Community Health Care Centre has been compromised in recent years with repeated temporary closures of the centre’s emergency department. The department is typically closed when not enough health professionals can be found to staff it.

Roden says the group has agreed to meet regularly, and the intermittent closures of the emergency room will be its initial focus.
