Kamloops residents making last-minute run to pay taxes on time

KAMLOOPS — Time is running out for Kamloops residents to pay their property taxes.

City Hall had lineups most of the day as people take care of taxes owed before the July 2 deadline. Residents can still pay in person on Tuesday the 2nd. However, with city buildings closed until Tuesday, residents can pay online over the long weekend.

“Our only concern with online is there’s no guarantee with the timing when we received,” said the city’s revenue and taxation manager Cara Dawson. “The penalty that could be applicable on the 3rd is 10 per cent. Usually if you pay today [Friday] with online banking, we’re likely to receive it on Tuesday. But there is some risk there.”

The city says if you pay in time online but are still penalized, you can dispute it. But it says overall most residents get their taxes in on time.

“We’re really lucky. People pay quite a bit of attention,” noted Dawson. “We do have a ‘tips’ program, we call it. So it’s pre-authorized payments, and a lot, probably about 25 per cent of our property owners choose to use that service.”

Residents looking to pay in-person on Tuesday, July 2 can either visit City Hall or, to avoid road construction near City Hall, the Tournament Capital Centre.
