Showers expected to welcome Canada Day long weekend in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Weather will be unsettled heading into the long weekend, but we could see clear skies for Canada Day.

Environment Canada forecaster Bobby Sekhon says there will be a chance of showers most days this week, along with the first half of the long weekend.

“It looks to be the latter half of the long weekend that should be a little bit more dry as we get into Canada Day,” he says.

Thursday and Saturday will likely be wet across the Thompson, Sekhon says, but things will get a little better on Sunday with a mix of sun and cloud and a slight chance of showers, and temperatures are expected to return to normal on Monday.

Rain may be a pain to campers this weekend, but Sekhon says it’s needed across the region.

“Precipitation is well needed, we’re kind of below normal for this time of year and June is the month of the year where we get the most precipitation on average,” Sekhon says. “This year, June has been pretty dry and that’s following a fairly dry spring as well, so definitely good to get some of those showers to help with things. However it’ll be nice to hopefully have a dry Canada Day.”

Sekhon says with unsettled conditions in the latter half of the week, there could be thunderstorms around the area. He reminds those travelling or spending time outdoors to check the forecast, and head indoors if thunder roars.
