KAMLOOPS — A local contractor has been hired to start repairing the Sagebrush Theatre roof.

In a news release, Western Canada Theatre says A&T Project Development will begin work immediately.

This past February, a cracked roof truss was discovered during a routine inspection leading to the closure of the facility.

School District 73 Facilities Director Art McDonald says repairs will begin on Monday.

“We’re basically going to be installing a steel structure that will take some of the load off the existing wood structure, and help support that structure.”

Repairs are expected to cost around $900,000, which McDonald says the District was anticipating.

Western Canada Theatre Managing Director Evan Klassen says the theatre group is hopeful to have shows be held from the Sagebrush as soon as possible.

“Our first production up at the Sagebrush Theatre is Dracula: The Bloody Truth, and that was to start previews on October 10th. We’re cautiously hoping that that might be possible, we may need to make some scheduling changes. But at the moment, we’re business as usual.”

The Sagebrush is expected to reopen by mid-October.

According to the release, Western Canada Theatre will be in contact with event promoters and local clients to make appropriate arrangements for any affected events.
