KAMLOOPS — A Logan Lake man charged with second-degree murder has died before going to trial in the case.

Defence lawyer Brad Smith tells CFJC Today that Gordon Fleming was charged with the murder of David Fast in Logan Lake on March 6, 2018.

“Mr. Fleming passed away last Friday morning,” Smith says, adding his death came after a battle with cancer. “It was a most unfortunate end to what has been a very, very difficult last chapter in his life.

“Being charged with a criminal offence as serious as murder, is something that people have to deal with in a serious way, and he had prepared his defence diligently. His instructions to his lawyers were to bring the matter to trial as soon as possible and that is what I did.”

Smith said Fleming was expected to go to trial in July, which he said is “significantly sooner” than the norm.

“One side of the narrative had been put out there, the other side of the narrative had yet to be heard, and I had every confidence in going forward with the defence that we intended to present,” Smith says. “Unfortunately, Mr. Fleming has passed away before having the opportunity to vindicate himself.”

On March 6 of last year, 55-year-old Fast was found dead after an alleged stabbing at the Copper Valley Motel in Logan Lake. Fleming was arrested in connection.
