KITIMAT, B.C. — The search is on for a fisherman who was swept away in the Kitimat River over the weekend.

Kitimat RCMP Cst. Kurtis Fink says the incident occurred just before 6:00 p.m. on Saturday night (June 8) — approximately eight kilometres north of Kitimat at the end of Powerline Road.

“Kitimat RCMP along with RCMP dive team, Kitimat ground search and rescue, Terrace Search and Rescue/Swiftwater teams, Kitimat Fire/Rescue, local helicopter and Kitimat Victim Services have been active in the investigation,” he says.

“Kitimat RCMP are advising that with the rains and melting snowpack in the mountains, water levels are rising, creating stronger currents and deeper water. Please consider wearing flotation devices while fishing in the river.”

At the request of the family, the name of the missing person, a 21-year-old male, will not be released at this time.

Mounties are also asking for the public’s help in allowing emergency crews to work safely and for anyone with any information to contact the Kitimat RCMP at (250) 632-7111.
