Canadian Taxpayers Federation stops in Kamloops on cross-country pipeline tour

KAMLOOPS — Representatives from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation made a stop in Kamloops today (June 5) as part of a cross-country pipeline tour.

A display was set up outside the Canco gas station on Tranquille to represent what not building pipelines is costing Canadian taxpayers.

CTF Alberta Director Franco Terrazzano says taxpayers have lost out on billions of dollars since 2013 because of the low price of Canadian oil.

“Canada isn’t getting full value for resources because we lack pipeline capacity to reach foreign customers,” Terrazzano said.

“Now, based on data released by the parliamentary budget officer, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation calculated how much additional revenue the federal government would receive if the price differential was lower and Canadian oil sales received full value compared to the American price. And, it’s a big number. The pipeline deficit is costing taxpayers over $6 billion since 2013 and that number’s increasing by $3.6 million every single day.”

The pipeline tour started a week and a half ago in Ottawa and will move towards the Prairies from here.

The CTF is asking people to contact their local MLAs to push for pipelines, like the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion, to be built.

“The vast majority of gasoline at gas stations like this, comes from the Trans Mountain pipeline,” said B.C. Director Kris Sims. “So, we absolutely need oil and gas here in Canada. It is the lifeblood of our economy, and so, based on that we have fully supported the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline, especially now especially now that, unfortunately, it’s taxpayers that own the thing.”
