KAMLOOPS — Convocation ceremonies have begun for students graduating from programs at Thompson Rivers University.

As students from the university’s Faculty of Education and Social Work were recognized this morning, so was the school new president.

Dr. Brett Fairbairn took over the role as President and Vice Chancellor in December.

Today (June 5) he was officially installed in the role.

“I aim to live up to TRU’s best hopes and aspirations,” Fairbairn said as he addressed students and guests. “I’m thankful to the presidential search committee, the board of governors and the executive team of TRU for the particular confidence that they have shown in me, and I have special thanks for Alan Shaver and his support and for his friendship during the transition.”

Fairbairn encouraged and congratulated the students as they prepare to leave the school and put their education to use.

“Education has changed, and will continue to change your lives, but not only your lives,” he said. “You will be employees and business owners, professionals and service providers, technicians and artists, and parents and citizens. The lives you lead and the work you do will improve the communities in which you live.”

Convocation ceremonies will run through Friday.
